Stef Allespach
Stef Allespach is an American-German artist, curator and writer living in Los Angeles and Berlin. Their research based practice of art and semiotics evolved under the mentorship of Mike Kelley, Diana Thater, and Larry Johnson at Art Center College of Design. By adopting a variety of art making approaches, Allespach works through lens-based technologies, as well as collaborative-performance and installation. As an act of remembrance labored over through material, the framework of their practice crystallizes through the disciplines of appropriation, film theory and feminism. Engaged in the unending process of language building, Allespach’s art intersects elements of the social, political and personal throughout their work. Their contemporary portrayals of conflict, attention and desire evoke the concurrent possibility of anywhere and site specificity.
Allespach exhibits, screens, lectures and performs nationally and internationally, institutions include: The Getty Center, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Akademie der Künste, The Fowler Museum, Lucca Film Festival, American Cinematheque and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions.
